Rizzo
At the beginning of the film Grease, Rizzo is portrayed as a tough character. She is not afraid of the enemy and she always speaks her mind. She is the leader of a group, the ‘Pink Ladies’. Through this group, she is depicted as a strong character, and is always willing to get into trouble. She commands authority and respect from the other members in her group. They respect her because she is daring in most occasions. In addition, she appears to be brave. This is because she is not scared to get into the enemy’s car. Rizzo proves that she is tough when she shows that she is not interested in her former lover, Danny (Knott n.p). Although she is not interested in him, she disapproves his relationship with Sandy. Through her disapproval of the relationship, Rizzo feels that Sandy should not continue being with Danny. However, despite her displeasure towards the relationship, she is disinterested in his former boyfriend. This shows that she is tough and willing to forget her past. She does not cling to what has already ended. For that reason, she tries to explore other avenues in her life.
Furthermore, to prove that she is tough, she is not willing to admit her love for Kenickie. Although she loves him, she feels that it would be soft of her to confess her feelings towards him. For that reason, she tries to remain tough although she knows that she loves Kenickie. Through this, it is clear that she has let her toughness get the better of her. This is because she does not show that she loves Kenickie, her current interest, though she has feelings for him. As the film progresses, Rizzo’s tough attitude is further depicted in a series of occasions. First, during her pregnancy scare, she lies to Kenickie that he is not the father to the presumptive child (Knott n.p). She tells him that it might be another person’s child. This is because she does not want to appear reliant on him. She wants to be independent and does not need rescue from another person. Through such acts, it is evident that she is strong and brave. She is willing to lie to the father of their presumptive baby because she does not want to appear dependent on him. This shows that she is tough and does not easily admit she is in need.
However, towards the end of the film, Rizzo appears to soften. To begin with, although she is always brave and tough, she is scared that she might be pregnant. She gets confused and fails to calm down most of the time. Through this pregnancy scare, she is depicted as vulnerable. She is no longer the tough woman who always speaks her mind and never afraid to be with the enemy. Thus, it is clear that she softens during the presumptive pregnancy. Additionally, towards the end of the film, she finally admits her feelings towards Kenickie (Knott n.p). Although she does it in her own way, she still confesses her feelings towards him. This shows that she has softened in regard to her earlier depiction as a tough character. She did not want to tell him how she feels towards him because she did not want to appear soft. However, she finally admits her feelings towards him, showing that she has changed throughout the film.
